Improve Your Gaming Performance With These Tips

Gamers are by their very nature competitive. Nobody wants to lose, especially when it means starting a long quest all over again or having to spend ages grinding away to make up what you have just lost. Fortunately, there are plenty of relatively easy ways to improve your gaming performance.

Getting a faster internet connection

Top of the list has got to be upgrading your internet connection. Hopefully, fibre broadband is an option in your area. With speeds of up to a gigabit being available, it would be a shame not to take advantage of all that extra power. You only have to step things up a little to notice a significant difference.

Just be sure to do your research. Start by finding out what the real speed is, this is usually included on broadband comparison sites. You need to avoid those that other gamers say have latency or jitter issues. It is worth searching for the name of the provider you are thinking of signing up to and adding the words ping or latency to the search. Usually, if there is an issue you will see forum comments. If there are lots and they are recent it is probably wise to steer clear of that firm, at least for now. Ideally, you want a ping rate of 50 ms or lower. The lower the better, anything under 20 ms is best.

An uncapped internet connection

Also, be aware of broadband limits. If you are an avid gamer you do not want your enjoyment to be curtailed because your provider has capped your connection. So, be sure to read the contract carefully before tying yourself to a provider for between 18 months and 2 years.

Upgrade your kit

It is amazing what a difference in updating your gaming PC, laptop, or gaming console can make. Depending on what you play with you can update your:

  • Graphics card
  • RAM
  • Switch to an SSD

Make more of what you already own

If you cannot afford to upgrade your components, just work with what you already have and tweak it to perform better. You can consider:

  • Overclocking your graphics card
  • Using software to boost your FPS
  • Disabling super and prefetch
  • Defragging or TRIMing your disk

Before you do any of the above, make sure that you understand the risks as well as the benefits. It is also wise to follow a good tutorial, that includes details of how to troubleshoot should you run into problems.

Invest in yourself

Potentially you can also upgrade or tweak yourself. For example, investing in a pair of Gunnar gaming glasses is a great way to improve your performance. They greatly reduce a lot of the eye strain symptoms gamers experience, which means you can often play for longer. When it comes to gaming, the adage “practice makes perfect” is true. Usually, the more you play the better you get.

Get enough sleep

But don´t play for too long. You also need to make sure you get enough sleep if you don't your reaction times will suffer.

Use reaction tests to improve your speed

If even with a good night's sleep you are still a bit slower than you would like to be, it is worth taking a few reaction tests. Often, simply taking them is enough to greatly speed you up.

So, if you have gotten into a bit of a rut gaming-wise, don´t worry. Just try some of the tips we have shared above. Most people see their performance radically improve when they do.
